Experience in Rapid Storyboard Prototyping during CHEFXR by ShapeXR

Experience in Rapid Storyboard Prototyping during CHEFXR by ShapeXR

2 Weeks ago i had my second experience in joining CHEFXR . The reason why im keen to join the second time was because i treat this more like a hands on workshop experience.
I read a lot of bookson UX , wheteher it's 2D UX or Spatial UX , but this workshop is more like format that goes beyond theoretical learning, to me it was like a problem solving workshop with a real case study, packaged with hands on prototyping tools for storyboarding.

Despite the availability of a prepared tutorial and setup designed for training, I found myself pointing towards addressing one of my own significant pain point—and I'm aware it's a common issue for many—regarding changing a car tire. As a woman, I realized I had never been taught this skill. It's a departure from traditional gender roles, and I've never had the opportunity to learn it. This challenge isn't unique to me only ; super confident it's shared by many women out there.

With this in mind, I envisioned a storyboard with a scenario where I would be forced to change a tire, not in a training environment but in a real emergency situation, perhaps on a rented car at night on the street.

An hour before the competition, i started doing some needful to it :

Research and Insight Gathering

  • Understanding the Task: I quickly research the process of changing a tire, focusing on emergency scenarios. Identify key steps and common challenges, especially those that might be more pronounced for individuals unfamiliar with the task.like myself 🤓
  • User Pain Points: Reflect on personal experiences and broader concerns related to tire changing, particularly from the perspective of individuals who might not have been traditionally taught this skill.

Storyboarding Process

  • Sketching the Scenario: Begin by sketching the emergency scenario on my post it then on wards to the board for each step to map out the needs of locating the tools, and executing the tire change.
  • UX Consideration : I went online to CHEFXR Design Blog and some of the UX experience i read before to just put things in perspective for me to design the UI

Designing UI

  • Figma-ing: Based on the sketch and UX flow, i design the needful quick UI in Figma and import them to ShapeXR dashboard

40 Minutes Quick Prototyping session

With me we had about 8 other designer parhaps who are doing the storyboarding as well, i;m not one to chat a lot during the session,😄 but i could feel it was a safe space to practice my storyboarding in confidence! We had about 40 minutes more or less to build the experience rapidly to put forward the idea.

Designing the Environment

I started by designing the environment where the interaction would take place, setting up the spatial layout, the context, and incorporating any physical or virtual elements that users would interact with.

UI Placement and 3D Models Placement

Followed by placing the UI elements within the environment considering user flow, ease of access and visual hierarchy in regrads of 3D models that i'm using for the guidance.

UX Design

Using the UX principle i prepared before, i started adjusting the UI, added some usability and accesibility guidance for user.

I think one of the thing that i didnt had time doing was interaction , and another thing was the " Attach to hand Feature ", i saw it online but maybe it wasnt available to my version at this time. This feature was kind of the driver of my ideas to be honest, but during the building process , i happen not to be able to find them within the tools 😄

Overall, i had a really great experience doing the prototype her, it was like a workshop practise not only for shapesxr but also to my problem solving :)
