An augmented reality experience, Scavanger Hunt of Sant Jordi, in collaboration with Òmnium and the libraries of Gràcia ( CAT : Una experiència de realitat augmentada la Cerca del tresor de Sant Jordi amb una col·laboració amb Òmnium i les llibreries de Gràcia )
During the week of Sant Jordi, in collaboration with Ómnium Gràcia , i developed an augmented reality (AR) "scavenger hunt" experience, involving the discovery of virtual roses hidden within books in bookstores from the 17th to the 22nd of April in 2023. The game was designed specifically for bookstores in the Vila de Gràcia neighborhood
The primary goals of this experience were to cover some local pain points:
Each of the bookstore are given a unique rose color and a custom animated AR experience based on the book cover they choose as part of the game
The AR game start with users start the game by scanning the QR code in every public point around the neighborhood of Gracia we place the poster in.
Once the application is launched, users we put will be presented with game rules and a map of their surrounding area with the participating bookstores marked as different roses. There is also a special location dedicated for photocall with the famous Sant Jordi dragon.
Users can select a location/bookstore they wish to visit. On selection, a route similar to Google Maps will guide them to their chosen location. Upon reaching the location, users will be prompted with a clue hinting to find specific books within the bookstore.
Once the correct book is found, a prompt will appear to "Open AR Camera". Users can then scan the cover of the book using their device's camera. If it's the correct book, an augmented reality experience unfolds: a different virtual rose appears, accompanied by an animation that summarizes the book's cover. A voice assistant will guide users on the next steps to collect the rose and move forward in the game.
The game system is designed to remember individual devices, the progress made in the game, including the virtual roses collected and the clues solved is saved , allowing users to pick up where they left off if they choose to close the application and return later.
Design Tools
I'm using combination of different software for this :
Canva for combining the design
Blender to design the 3D components
Adobe After Effect to create the visual effect and motion experience
Figma to design the interface of the experience
Onirix to design the AR Experience
Google Analytics to track the experience performances
Running for one week during bookstores hour, this game managed to capture 387 players
Based on the interview with the bookstores and basic google analytics , the game managed to capture the demographic we wanted for the bookstores in the neighbourhood, not only that , they also purchased books that the bill they presented later on during the collection day at the pick up counter of Òmnium Gracia stall.
I also managed to catch some of the players during the game in the bookstores to seek feedback , take photos and interview about their experience about the game. On the day of Sant Jordi, many came to pick up their prize 🏆 ,
